Hot Concert Wall Quilt

This cheerful quilt is really simple and quick to make. The embroidery in the middle features a trio of Snowman musicians, and we used patterned fabric to create an "audience" around them. The quilt is great for children, and makes a wonderful gift.

The finished size of the quilt is about 31 1/2" x 31 1/2".

We used:

1 fat quarter of pale blue fabric for the center,
about 1/4 yard of red fabric for narrow borders,
about 3/4 yard of blue fabric for borders and binding,
about 1 yard of fabric with snowmen arranged in lines. There are a lot of different fabrics with such patterns. Most fabric stores, in our area anyway, have a pretty good selection, and you can even find fabric like this at Wal-Mart

You will also need a piece of batting and fabric for backing.

For embroidery, we used polyester embroidery threads.

Cutting:

Out of pale blue fabric, cut

a square measuring 11" x 11".

Out of red fabric, cut

2 strips measuring 1" x 11",
2 strips measuring 1" x 11 1/2",
2 strips measuring 1" x 24 1/2" *
2 strips measuring 1" x 25" *

* The last 4 strips are for the outer borders. Their length will depend on the size of the previous border, which is made of the snowmen-patterned fabric. Since the snowmen pattern can vary in size, these measurements will depend on the exact fabric you are using.

On our snowman-patterned fabric, the motif is 5" tall (it has two rows of snowmen, each 2 1/2" tall). We cut 4 strips 5 1/2" wide (for seam allowance) and 31" long to make mitered corners.

Out of darker blue fabric, cut

2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 11 1/2",
2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 13 1/2";
2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 25 1/2",
2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 31 1/2"

The later 4 strips are for the outer borders, so their length will vary depending on the size of the snowman pattern.

Assembling the Top

Sew the 1" x 11" red strips to the upper and lower edges of the cental 11" x 11" square.
Sew the 1" x 11 1/2" red strips to the left and right edges of the cental 11" x 11" square.

Sew the 1 1/2" x 11 1/2" blue strips to the left and right edges of the cental square.
Sew the 1 1/2" x 13 1/2" blue strips to the upper and lower edges of the cental square.

Sew the snowman striped patterned border to the central part. Make mitered corners.

Attach the next 1" wide red border to all edges. In our case, they measure 1 1/2" x 24 1/2" and 1 1/2" x 25" (including seam allowance).

Sew the 3 1/2" wide blue strips to all edges. In our case these are strips measuring
3 1/2" x 25 1/2" and 3 1/2" x 31 1/2".

Embroidery

Stabilize the central part with polyester craft felt instead of stabilizer. Baste the quilt top to the felt in the ditch along the colored borders. Embroider the designs from Musical Snowmen set, one design at a time.
After the embroidery is finished, rip the baste and cut away the excess felt around the embroidery.

Quilting:

Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all three layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted densely in a free motion style all over the quilt.
After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.

Finish the raw edges with the binding.

The quilt is ready. Enjoy!
